ADHD

Do you find it difficult to stay focused, complete tasks, manage time, or sit still, even when you are trying your best to stay organized and on track?

At Sona Psychiatry & TMS, we provide compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric care focused on helping patients improve attention, reduce impulsivity, and strengthen daily functioning through individualized treatment plans.

What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a mental health condition that affects attention, impulse control, and activity levels. It is commonly diagnosed in childhood but can continue into adolescence and adulthood.

ADHD is not a matter of willpower or motivation. It is related to differences in brain development and neurotransmitter activity that affect focus, organization, and self-regulation. Symptoms can vary from person to person and may change over time.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

ADHD symptoms generally fall into two main categories: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity.

Inattention may include difficulty sustaining focus, being easily distracted, forgetfulness, trouble following instructions, disorganization, and frequently losing items needed for daily tasks.

Hyperactivity and impulsivity may include restlessness, difficulty sitting still, talking excessively, interrupting others, acting without thinking, and difficulty waiting one’s turn. In adults, hyperactivity may appear more as inner restlessness than visible movement.

These symptoms can affect school, work performance, relationships, and day-to-day responsibilities.

What are the different types of ADHD?

ADHD is commonly classified into three presentations:

  • Predominantly inattentive presentation
  • Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive presentation
  • Combined presentation (features of both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity)

Each type can present differently depending on age, environment, and individual coping strategies. A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation is important for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment planning.

When should I seek help?

ADHD symptoms can significantly impact performance, relationships, and self-esteem when left untreated. You should consider seeking evaluation if you consistently struggle with focus, organization, time management, or impulsive behavior that interferes with daily life.

It is especially important to seek support if these challenges are affecting school or work performance, creating ongoing stress, or making it difficult to meet responsibilities. Early evaluation can help identify effective strategies and treatment options.
